SUMMERLIM 2024
Welcome!
Please join us on our journey through Ancient Civilisations in this year’s Summerlim 2024 edition !
Each week, we explored a different ancient civiliSation— the Incas, Mayas and aztecs, Ancient Egypt, Ancient China and Ancient Greece — through themed workshops: art & crafts, maths, science experiments, business, ict and english.
Summerlim Highlights !
Science Experiments: students observed grains of corn "dance" as carbon dioxide bubbles lifted them, and lifted ice cubes with wool and salt. They created fantastic artwork with "magical" paints made from turmeric, baking soda, and lemon. They also performed the classic upside-down cup of water trick, using a card to hold the water in place without spilling.
Our students also explored the phases of the moon, learning why they occur and demonstrating the Earth's movement cycle. They really enjoyed representing the composition of air, modelling different molecules each week: water, carbon dioxide, molecular oxygen, and molecular nitrogen.
Finally, they discovered the process of photosynthesis and illustrated it on paper.
This summer, our PE sessions at the summer school have been a fantastic blend of fun and learning, perfectly matching our theme of ancient civiliSations. In the first week, we journeyed to the ancient Americas, immersing ourselves in the culture of the Mayas, Incas, and Aztecs by playing a version of the thrilling Mesoamerican ballgame, similar to Pok-A-Tok. The excitement continued into the second week as we explored ancient Egypt. Here, students tried their hand at a game resembling modern hockey, which was enjoyed by the Egyptians long ago. Week three took us to ancient China, where we introduced the students to table tennis, a traditional sport that remains popular today. The final week was all about ancient Greece, where the children played a ball game akin to dodgeball, giving them a fun and active way to connect with Greek history.
Beyond these ancient games, we kept the energy high with obstacle courses and a variety of traditional sports like football, basketball, PING PONG and volleyball. It has been an incredible experience watching the students learn, play, and have a great time through these engaging activities!
What a productive summer it has been IN ENGLISH! This year, our topic was Ancient CiviliSations. The first thing we needed to know was where and when these civilizations developed. Using blank maps, we located their whereabouts. We knew they existed a long time ago, but when exactly? To find out, we conducted research in our fantastic computer room and created a timeline with the help of string and balloons to show the span of each civilization.
Throughout the rest of the weeks, we watched short videos that taught us about these civilizations and conducted quizzes and made posters to display what we had learned. We also learned about the different steps to make a mummy, read Chinese fables and Greek myths, such as the Labyrinth of the Minotaur. We reflected on the similarities and differences between these civilizations and our own, as well as how our modern-day reality has been influenced by our past.
It has been a great experience where we have all learned together and had fun along the way.

How does light and dark effect photosynthesis?
Light

Results
Without enough light, a plant cannot photosynthesis very quickly - even if there is plenty of water and carbon dioxide and a suitable temperature. Increasing the light intensity increases the rate of photosynthesi.
